I was born some decades ago, therefore i have been witnessing independence day celebration for more than twenty-five years from now. Wow, that’s a very long period of time (for a youth). Has anything actual changed? I keep asking my self, what was the difference between the independence day we had in 1998 and 2008, 1999 and 2009, 2008 and 2018. Those are interval of ten years. Yet, are there huge transformation in our country?
A quick look at what independence is. According to wikipedia, “Independence is a condition of a person, nation, country, or state in which its residents and population, or some portion thereof, exercise self-government, and usually sovereignty, over the territory.
Every 1st of October is celebrated as Independence day of our lovely country, which marks the proclamation of British rule on 1st October 1960.
Great heroes fought for the independence we enjoyed today some of which are
1. Herbert Macaulay (grandson of Ajayi Crowther)
2. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (first Nigeria President)
3. Chief Obafemi Awolowo
4. Sir Ahmadu Bello
5. Chief Anthony Enahoro among others
These are great men history will never forget. After 59 solid years yet their name is chanted by both the older and the new generation.
Presently, the ruling of our united country is by same set of people and same system(failed one). What will this rulers be remembered for? Looted funds, abuse of power or miss appropriation of resources?
Are we actual independent in real sense?
A verse of the National Anthem says “Thy labour of our heroes past, shall never be in vain” with the way this country is, we are making their labour be in vain because a nation where electricity is not stable, lacks good roads, poor health sector, massive unemployment especially among the youths, Education system is so poor, portable water is zero, security is a huge challenge. What then are we independent about, where is the independence they fought for?
Top politicians travel abroad for treatment each time they are sick, their children schools abroad so as to have quality education, yet they come back home and take over the little job that should be benefited by the common man. If Foreigners can comes down to our country and we again work for them like slaves then what are we independent about?
Those who are to make the right decisions to set things right, to make Nigeria a great a nation are busy looting our funds not minding what the outcome might be since they are not going to feel the effect.
If we still have to travel to another man’s land for better living, then we are not yet independent, we are still colonized by the so called colonizers.
Nigeria is not yet Independent but Happy independence day.
